The advantages of installing solar panel batteries

From a practical point of view, batteries are only compulsory in off-grid solar installations, i.e. those that do not have access to the main electricity grid, such as a house in the countryside.

They are also recommended in agricultural self-consumption installations that use the energy generated by the panels for water extraction (solar pumping) or for installations in motor homes.

In on-grid solar systems, in public buildings, residential communities or individual homes, installing batteries is not mandatory. This is because the building is connected to the main electricity grid and if the solar system doesn’t generate enough electricity, the required energy will always be supplied by the grid. However, despite this, it is an option that you could give some thought to, as it can help to:

  • Ensure the power supply. Thanks to solar batteries, in the event of storms and power outages, we have a surplus of energy to keep our appliances running.
  • Reduce the ecological footprint. Photovoltaic installations with batteries reduce the ecological footprint, as solar energy is 100% clean and non-polluting.
  • Be independent. Self-consumption with solar batteries allows us to be self-sufficient in terms of energy. Especially if we take into account that the capacity of solar panel batteries (the amount of energy they are capable of storing) is becoming increasingly higher.

What is the lifespan of solar panel batteries?

The lifespan of solar panel batteries isn’t infinite. Over time, these elements are subject to wear and tear and will lose their capacity and efficiency.

In addition to this, when we replace the batteries with new ones, the inverter could experience problems and even fail, as the model in question may not be compatible with that particular type of installation.

The average lifespan of batteries for solar panels is anywhere between 5 and 15 years. As a result you will have to replace them at least once during the lifespan of the photovoltaic panels, which is usually between 25 and 30 years.

This duration is also dependent on the model chosen and the use we make of it.

Lithium batteries last the longest. Their depth of discharge is high (between 80% and 90%) and their memory effect is practically nil. This means that they withstand discharges extremely well without compromising their lifespan, which can be as long as 20 years (or up to 6,000 discharge cycles at 80%).

The lifespan of gel batteries for solar panels is shorter (12-15 years). Even so, they are often used for heavy, long-term operation, or in places where maintenance is difficult.

In the case of seasonal batteries, their service life is determined by usage. These types of batteries are popular in solar installations, are good value for money, and have good discharge resistance. They are especially recommended for installations that require constant energy input and output.

In general, stationary batteries for solar panels have a lifespan of 15 years, although their discharge cycles depend on each individual model (OPzS, OPzV, TOPzS or EPzS).

Finally, AGM solar panel batteries have the lowest lifespan of all, and need to be replaced every 5 to 10 years. Nevertheless, they are a good option for systems with high discharge rates.
